Veinte mil leguas de viaje submarino (Stuart Paton, 1916) & Submarina de Improvisación

The inauguration of Curtocircuíto will host a Live cinema designed specifically for this event. Ephemeral formation Improvisation Submarine The film will be set to live music Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Stuart Paton, 1916). The film is a naive and pretentious adaptation (bordering on vodevilry) of the novel of the same name by Jules Verne. The production, however, relied on the technical developments of John Ernest Williamson, who had developed the first underwater photography and filming system just a year earlier. Precisely this innovative encounter between science and art is the main reason for choosing this film and is one of the convergences that the festival wants to explore through various activities.

Improvisation Submarine: Underwater improvisational trio consisting of Paulo Pascual to the theremin, Saul Puga To the double bass and Xavier Bértolo with the synthesizers. The line-up emerges spontaneously and punctually for this live-musical film show. Musicians will explore the sonic depths of their instruments by improvising a soundtrack for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916) which will be a unique and literally unrepeatable show.

Irene de Andrés & Javi Álvarez - Dopo la pausa (AV)

TICKETSGRATUITO - DE BALDE - FREE

Dopo la pausa

Dopo la pausa results from a journey through the western Mediterranean following the evolution of touristification from the main stage of its maximum exponent: the cruise ship. These floating cities that glide from port to port like Air Hockey chips offer through the cabin window a tracking shot propitiated by the ship's movement, which invites reflective contemplation with references to other films based on cruise ships that sail this highly sought-after sea. The film's soundtrack was composed and performed using the pianos in the Spanish Academy in Rome and will be played live at this session of the Curtocircuito Festival.

Irene de Andrés

Irene de Andrés was born in one of the most desirable tourist destinations, the island of Ibiza, which has inevitably led him to investigate the evolution of leisure and the very meaning of travel throughout history, from the first settlers to tour operators. Spas, cruises and discotheques are the key settings for the artist who, through filmic, sculptural or photographic pieces, forms trips through time and through different waters, in which she connects various historical events that make us reflect on the model of tourism consumption, specially designed for the working class.

Javi Álvarez

Javi Álvarez He is an artist and musician born in Santiago de Compostela, a city that has 96,000 registered and that broke its record for tourists in 2022, exceeding one and a half million overnight stays. In 2023, this figure increased by 33%, and only in the first half of 2024 has it pulverized these brands.

Iván Torres con Andrés Rodrigues & Xoán-Xil - URHO AV

URHO AV

URHO is a performative project that feeds on the sound and images recorded by the audiovisual artist Iván Torres Hdez aboard the icebreaker of the same name, flagship of the Finnish fleet. The rich and complex result of the field recordings is the basis of the soundscape performed live by musicians and sound artists Andrés Rodrigues, Xoán-Xil López and Iván Torres himself using synthesisers and radio systems to which instruments built by Xoán-Xil are added. The piece has a character of improvisation and dialogue between the three artists that react to visuals where documentary-style images are mixed with celluloid animation. The impassive presence of the crew contrasts with a constant movement and deafening sound as the icebreaker makes its way through a frozen Baltic Sea surrounded by an almost lunar landscape.

Emil Saiz & Judith Adataberna ft. Jean Painlevé - The Dance of the Witches AV

TICKETSGRATUITO - DE BALDE - FREE

The Dance of the Witches

“The Dance of the Witches”, curated by Curtocircuíto, is an audiovisual performance by guitarist, composer and producer Emil Saiz & visual artist Adataberna, indialogue with Jean Painlevé’s underwater films. It proposes a descentinto the abyss, where sound and image converge in a dense, immersive flow. Saiz’s composition unfolds slowly and deliberately. It is adance of tension, rapture and release, exploring the elasticity of timeas it breathes and expands, much like the deep-sea creatures in thefilms. Combined with Adataberna's visual proposal, a reinterpretationof Painlevé's images (transforming them employing copper plates, amaterial historically used in alloys for underwater equipment, such asdivers' helmets), the piece becomes an invocation, an otherworldlyritual to draw the audience into the present moment —an invitation tosubmerge fully and experience the resonance of the unknown.

Emil Saiz

Emil Saiz’s music is about catharsis. Eschewing conventionalstructures and durational constraints, with an emphasis on the physicality of sound, Saiz generates cascading clusters of guitar-based textures that burst and implode unto themselves, aiming to open portals through which hidden emotional resonances can surface.Founder of experimental pop outfit Nothing Places and member ofBalearic band Oso Leone, Saiz has collaborated, recorded andperformed with many artists, including Iván Ferreiro, Suso Saiz,Christina Rosenvinge, Niño de Elche and Zahara, among others. In 2024 he released Affect/ Reflect -his first solo output-, a sonicmeditation created for The Listening Affect, a festival for soundecologies curated by the Institute for Postnatural Studies and hostedby Galería Municipal do Porto.Originally from Madrid, Spain, he is currently based in Porto, Portugal.

Judith Adataberna

Judith Adataberna has developed her work through experimental film, photography and video installation. She studied Fine Arts in Pontevedra and completed her studies at the Laboratorio de Cine experimental MÁSTER-LAV. A daughter of fishermen, she grew up on the coast and had significant contact with manual labour and nature. In her family, there was always a strong relationship between death and the supernatural, which led her to become curious at an early age. For this reason, her work has always shown a constant need to challenge the hegemonic conception of reality, creating proximities between the dreamlike vision and the speculative vision of science. Between structural cinema and the language of video games, she often proposes body cameras that test possible "models and simulations" of reality, seeking the liminal spaces of consciousness and proprioception through the hallucinatory. Some recurring themes in her work are the mechanisms of interspecies survival and how technological evolution has added a rereading of transhumanism and affective development with the machines that surround us.

Here you can read a curatorial text by Judith Adataberna.

33EMYBW & Joey Holder AV

Shanghai-native producer and visual artist 33EMYBW has been an active member of the Chinese music scene for over a decade. Drawing inspirations from modern dance music, folk music and a wide range of visual materials, she gradually refined various mixed conceptual elements into a form that combines personal rhythm and stunning experimental sound designs. Joey Holder is an artist whose work raises philosophical questions about our universe and things yet unknown regarding the future of science, medicine, biology, and human-machine interactions. Her artwork is a form of 'worlding' in which she makes immersive multimedia installations that explore the limits of humans and how we experience non-human, natural, and technological forms.

Riccardo Giovinetto - FEMINA AV

FEMINA is a double-screen audio-visual performance in which echoes of polyphonic madrigals are layered on the composition of original electronic music. At the same time, samples of Renaissance paintings are transformed into an evolving stream of images. The project delves into the captivating concept of grace as defined by the Renaissance, particularly by the painters who elevated the feminine figure to its pinnacle. The interplay of sound and video, guided by the same conceptual principles, creates an immersive experience that captivates the senses.During the performance, the golden section dialogues with alternative proportions and principles. Similarly, vocal polyphonies were processed to alter their nature so that the resulting samples could relate to the sculptured sounds of electronic music. This is an imaginary journey of an AI through its various stages of apprehension, interiorisation, and self-expression of grace's concept.

Mwëslee DJ SET

Mwëslee will present one of his eclectic sets, in which sounds from the past and the future —north and south— interconnect, and bpm and dynamics fluctuate from 0 to 100, from deconstructed new age to frenetic suburban rhythms, in an assemblage of the global sound of the 21st century.
