One of the first symbolic acts of the Spanish Republic was the handover of the Casa de Campo, one of the largest historic gardens in the world, to Madrid’s City Council. There are many accounts of what happened there on the 1st of May 1931. Some 300,000 people entered, tanker trucks were brought in and filled with water, people hunted rabbits and threw them into paellas, kids wore small snakes as belts, a man drowned in the lake... but there are very few recorded images. Within this void, Always Real Never unReal conjures up possible and impossible images in a fantastical dream: there are romantic millennials and an old punk, there is a drone and some lions trapped in a zoo, there are boats and there are people singing on the dry fields. It's all shot in 16mm and in Instagram stories.
